Features

At the Seafarers' centre we believes that everyone, irrespective of age, disability or cognitive ability, should be able to use this website with as little impairment as possible. For this reason this website has been developed with accessibility in mind:

All graphics have an appropriate alternative "alt" text entry
No use of graphics for site navigation.
No use of drop down menus for site navigation
High contrast between text and background colours
No background images to content
Minimum levels of navigation
On hover "Links" are rendered as underlined text and no other text is underlined
Most text can be re-sized by the user, using browser text-resize functions.
The page layout does not use tables but Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)
All pages will render in browsers that do not support Javascript
There are no pop-up windows.

Access keys

This site uses access keys. These keyboard shortcuts that give web browser or screen-reader users quick access to the main pages of this site. If you are using Internet Explorer on Windows pressing the ALT key in combination with the access key will give focus to that specific link on the menu. Then press the enter key to go to the desired page. If using Firefox on Windows or Linux will take you to the page directly. If you are using a Macintosh, pressing the CTRL key in combination with the access key will automatically send you to that specific page.

Making the text bigger

The easiest way to adjust the size of all the fonts is by by choosing:

view> text size> largest (Internet Explorer)
view > text size> increase (Mozilla Firefox)
view>zoom> 200% (Opera)
view> text zoom> 200% (Netscape)
view> make text bigger (Safari)

So that the majority of current and future web browser software can display this website correctly, all pages on this website have been tested for compliance with the following standards and guidelines:

In addition this website has been tested on Internet Explorer 6/7, and Firefox 1.5.0.10/2.0.3 web browsers. The checks on these pages also include the use of the Lynx web browser to review how the pages display in text only mode for screen-readers.
